Obituary for Dorothy Hall Murrell Robinson
On Monday, February11, 2013, God called his daughter, Dorothy Hall Murrell Robinson from service to reward. Dorothy was born on September 19, 1926 in Greenville, NC to the late Lillian Foreman and Hillard Murrell, Sr. She was the younger of three children, two who preceded her in death (Talmadge and Hillard, Jr.). Dorothy's parents taught her to love and reverence God. At an early age she became a member of Sycamore Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Greenville, NC. She later moved her membership to Corner Stone Missionary Baptist Church in Elizabeth City, NC where she remained a faithful member until her health wouldn't permit her to do so. Dorothy was educated in Greenville, NC (Pitt County) at C.M. Epps High School. After graduation she attend North Carolina College at Durham, later renamed as North Carolina Central University where she received a B.S.C. After receiving her degree she migrated to Elizabeth City where she was employed at Elizabeth City State Teacher's College, now known as Elizabeth City State University, in the Registrar's Office. While here she met the love of her life, the late Albert C. Robinson and to this union one son was born, Richard Rodney Robinson. She soon realized her passion for teaching and joined the staff at P.W. Moore High School where she taught typing and history. Because of her growing love for teaching business courses, she moved her employment to Currituck Union School and then was promoted to a position at J.P. Knapp High School where she taught typing and business classes. During this time integration came about and Dorothy was one of the few black teachers that was selected to move to the new school, Currituck High School where she remained until her retirement. After retirement she continued giving of her talents by teaching continuing education courses at the College of the Albemarle. Dorothy was a very outgoing person and was involved in many church and civic organizations. While at Corner Stone she was active in Sunday School, creating the church special program bulletins, singing in the senior choir, and a member of the program committee. Her civic duties included: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., University Women, Jr. Matrons, Epicureans, Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Chums, Inc., Eastern Star, Future Business Leaders of America, Daughters of Isis, Senior Class Advisor Class of 1966 at Currituck Union and Yearbook Editor/Advisor at J.P.Knapp. In April 1954 she was co-founder of the Robinson and Hunter Funeral Home. Dorothy leaves to cherish her wonderful memories one son Richard Rodney (Sharon) Robinson of Elizabeth City, NC, one step-son Bishop A.C. (Joycelyn) Robinson also of Elizabeth City, NC. Two grandchildren: Richard Brandon Robinson and Special Friend' Johnae of Apex, NC and Alexandria Danielle Robinson of Durham, NC. One great grandchild Reese Brooklyn Robinson. Four step-grandchildren: Dr. Ed. Alisa (Rev. Frankie, Esq.) McLean of Durham, NC, Dr. Joynita (Rev. Lorenzo) Nicholson of Richmond, Va., Dr. Aquita (Dr. Paul) Harvey of Atlanta, Ga., A.C. Robinson III and fiancee' Amber of Raleigh, NC. Seven step great grandchildren: Imari McLean, Christian Harvey, Taylor Harvey, Ian Nicholson, Joel Nicholson, Jace Nicholson and Acelyn Robinson. A Wake for the late Dorothy Hall Murrell Robinson will be Sunday, February 17, 2013 at Corner Stone Missionary Baptist Church at 6:00pm. Funeral services will be held 1:00pm Monday, February 18, 2013 also at Corner Stone Missionary Baptist Church 507 Martin Luther King Drive, Elizabeth City, NC. Dr. Walter L. Smith, Jr., pastor of Corner Stone will be officiating. The Eulogist is Rev. William Bowser. The family will receive friends at 127 Hunters Trail West, Elizabeth City, North Carolina, Family members and friends are invited to pay final tribute to Mrs. Robinson at www.robinsonfuneralandcremation.com Funeral arrangements entrusted to the staff of A.
