Obituary for Peggy Joyce Seymore Baker
Peggy Joyce Seymore Baker was born on July 3, 1948 in Currituck, North Carolina, the
youngest daughter of seven children to the late Oscar Manford Seymore, Sr. and Bunie Wilson
Seymore. Peggy was raised in a home which focused on education, excellence and service to
her Christian faith. Peggy accepted Christ at a young age at Good Hope A.M.E. Zion Church.
Peggy was raised in Currituck, NC and was educated at the Currituck Union School. During her
senior year, she was a part of the first class to integrate J.P. Knapp High School in the Currituck
County School System. Peggy earned valedictorian honors but was denied the title because
she was Black. She continued her pursuit of academic excellence at Bennett College in
Greensboro, NC and graduated as a proud Bennett Belle with an English degree. Upon
graduation, she was recruited by IBM Corporation and began her successful career. As a
manager, she prided herself in helping and mentoring others throughout her 40 plus years with
the company.
Peggy was married on June 26, 1976 to her loving husband, Rev. Louis Baker, Jr. Three
daughters are the result of this union, and the tradition of education, excellence and Christian
service continued. Their story is truly one of love at first sight. From the time they met until the
end, Louis and Peggy remained loving and committed to each other.
As a loving wife, great mother, Christian educator, and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority
Incorporated, it is evident that Peggy enjoyed taking care of her family, church family and her
community. She served as the first lady of Amazing Grace Church until she and her husband
stepped down for health reasons in 2017. For over 30 years, she worked diligently, mentoring
and teaching young people about the love of Christ and the importance of proper etiquette. She
often reminded the youth of I Corinthians 6:19 which tells us that our bodies are the temple of
the Holy Spirit so we should look and act accordingly.
She loved shopping and her fierce sense of fashion was undeniable. She loved the holiday
season, and we can all attest that her home holiday décor was unmatched. Peggy was
competitive and enjoyed playing card games with her family. She was a strong and actively
loving presence in the lives of those she loved and instilled specific lessons in each person she
touched. Her favorite song was “Jesus Loves Me” and she certainly loved the Lord her God with
all her heart, all her soul and all her mind.
Peggy was called to her heavenly home on the morning of November 2, 2020 and is now safely
resting in the arms of Jesus, fully healed and restored.
Peggy was loved by many people. She is mourned by her husband of 44 years, Rev. Louis
Baker, Jr., children Asheley Baker and Andrea Baker Smith (Michael), grandchildren Gerald
Bostick, Jr., Caleb Louis Smith, and Cyrus Jonathan Smith, brothers Archie Seymore (Sarah)
and Larry Seymore, sisters Ruth Gregory (Winfield), Marjorie Williams (Charles), and Rev.
Addie Blanche Overton, dear friend Emma Delores Reagan, and a host of relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her daughter, Mahogany Emma Baker, granddaughter Braelyn
Emma Smith, and brother Oscar Manford Seymore, Jr.
