Obituary for Ulysses Winford Spellman
ULYSSES WINFORD SPELLMAN
ELIZABETH CITY - Ulysses W. Spellman, 87, peacefully passed away on Friday, April 22, 2016 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with his family at his bedside.
Born February 8, 1929 in Currituck County, NC, he was the youngest son of the late Earl Lucian and Mary Jane Mercer Spellman. Ulysses was predeceased by his loving and devoted wife of 60 years, Edith Marie (Barnard) Spellman; one son, Dwayne C. Spellman; one brother Earl L. Spellman and two sisters, Thelma S. Williams and Audrey S. Worrell.
At an early age he accepted Christ at New Providence Missionary Baptist Church. He graduated from Currituck County Training School in the class of 1948. He married his childhood sweetheart and relocated to Harlem, NY. Always a hard worker he managed to assist his family, friends and loved ones as they journeyed to NY in later years. Affectionately known as “Stoney” you could always count on him to make you laugh or make you mad but he was definitely dependable. He retired after 21 years from the NYC Transit Authority MABSTOA as a bus operator and returned home to NC. He was baptized as a Jehovah’s Witness in 2001.
He leaves to forever cherish his memory one son, Winford L. Spellman; two daughters, Brenda M. Spellman-Stephenson and Myra Bass (Anthony); two daughters in law, Sharon Spellman and Darlene M. Spellman; eight grandchildren; nine great – grandchildren; one brother, E. Randolph Spellman (Catherine); a very special brother in law, Lindsey Barnard (Grizzell) who resided in close proximity for over 60 years and a host of other relatives and friends.
We will have a Memorial Service at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Central Congregation, 313 Shirley St, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 at 3:00 pm on Saturday, April 30, 2016.
The Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at 3:00 pm with viewing from 2:00 pm – 2:45 pm at New Providence Missionary Baptist Church, 876 East Ridge Rd, Shawboro, NC 27973. Officiant, Pastor Tyrone Smith and Eulogist, Elder Marcus Etheridge.
Interment at the Barnard Family Cemetery. Services entrusted to Robinson and Son Funeral Home. www.robinsonfuneralandcremation.com
