Obituary for Alma Mayola McIntyre Newby
Alma Mayola McIntyre was born on July 1, 1924 in Goldsboro, North Carolina. She was the third of ten children born to the late Hubert Lee McIntyre and Mabel Parks McIntyre. As the oldest daughter, Alma quickly assumed a role of caring for her younger siblings and they revered her as such for all their entire lives. At an early age, while attending public schools in Goldsboro, Alma became enamored with education. This culminated with her being the first in her family to graduate from college. She earned a Bachelor's degree from North Carolina College for Negroes, know today as North Carolina Central University. After graduation, she moved to Elizabeth City where she met and married the late Archie Newby, Sr. She began her career as the Secretary to the President of Elizabeth City State Teachers College. Alma served this noble institution for 39 years before retirement as Director of Financial Aid. While she may have been bred with the North Carolina Central colors of maroon and gray, there was no doubt that Alma was truly an Elzabeth City State University Viking at her core. She led n extraordinary life as an mentor and role model to many. Her children frequently tell stories of happenstance meetings with former students of Elizabeth City State University who once they realized "Archie and Peaches" are indeed Alma Newby's children would say "If it hadn't been for Mrs. Newby I would have never graduated from college." Alma was also actively involved in many facets of the Elizabeth City commuinty. This includes her legacy of service as a member and officer of her beloved Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; Jack and Jill of America; The Links; The Junior Matrons Club and a number of other civic and service organizations. She also was a faithful member of St. James A. M. E. Zion Church. In 1994, Alma became ill and relocated to Atlanta, Georgia to be near her children and family. While in Atlanta she carved out a role for herself at. A. G. Rhode Home and could frequently be seen counseling and advising staff members whe she wasn't winning all the word games the residents played. She was greatly loved and as the nurses said upon her passing, "She is the fabric of this building." She will be remembered as a loyal wife, a doting mother and grandmother, the loving and nurturing matriarch of her family, devoted friend and a committed colleague and leader. In addition to her parents, preceding her in death was her husband of 33 years, George P. A. Newby, Sr. as well as her nine siblings. She leaves to cherish and celebrate her life, her son, George P. A. Newby Jr. and his wife Bonita Perkins Newby; her daughter, Alison Newby Taylor; two grandsons, Jonathan Newby and Joshua Newby; in addition to two sisters in law, Geraldine McIntyre and Carolyn McIntyre and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Celebration of life will be Monday, July 28, 2014 at Noon in Mt. Lebanon A. M. E. Zion Church. A service of Reflection and viewing will be held at 11:00 AM until the time of service.
